Ky Sam Temple festival

10th day of the first lunar month

Ban Ngan, Vinh Quang area (near the provincial centre)

Honours Nung Tri Cao (1025–1055), who led resistance against the Song invaders. The opening rite is on the eve; the main day brings folk games and ethnic performances. The temple is a National Historic and Cultural Monument (1993).

Teams of young men from each hamlet scramble for the lucky “blessing ring” after the signal blast, hoping for a fortunate year. Dragon and lion dances and folk games follow. Listed as National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020.

A Tay women’s festival honouring the Moon Mother, with nights of ritual singing that invite fairies down to bless the harvest. An ancient, poetic and rarely seen rite.

In late spring, pear and plum blossoms whiten the slopes beside stilt houses: a lovely time for photos and village walks.

The falls are at their fullest, and in September – October the rice turns gold along the Quay Son River. Peak season: plan ahead and contact your accommodation early.

Golden rice lines both banks of the Quay Son River, families harvest by hand and morning mist settles on the valley floor. It is the best season to climb Pi Pha viewpoint and walk between the villages. Harvest timing shifts with the weather each year, so check with your host before you go.

Thin-shelled, nutty Trung Khanh chestnuts are a famous speciality. In season, visit the orchards and buy freshly roasted chestnuts to take home.

Pink and violet buckwheat flowers bloom across rocky fields, a season photographers wait for all year.

Deep cold snaps can bring frost and even light snow to Phia Oac. Watch the forecast and bring warm layers and traction for the road.

Lunar dates shift every year, and flower and water seasons depend on the weather. Please check official local announcements before you travel.
