Getting to Cao Bang

  • Coaches, sleeper buses and limousine vans run daily from Hanoi, taking about 6–8 hours.
  • Driving: take National Highway 3 via Thai Nguyen, or go via Lang Son on Highway 4A; the last stretch has many bends.
  • The Dong Dang – Tra Linh expressway had not opened as of September 2026; traffic still uses the national highways.
  • Cao Bang has no airport; the nearest is Noi Bai (Hanoi).

Papers, money and phone signal

  • Sights such as Ban Gioc Waterfall, Pac Bo and Ngoc Con lie right by the border: always carry your passport or ID, follow signs and instructions from officials.
  • Hosts must register your stay, so hand over your passport at check-in.
  • Bring enough cash: markets, homestays and rural eateries often take cash only; ATMs are mainly in the provincial centre and larger towns such as Trung Khanh.
  • Phone signal is weak in some valleys and high areas: download offline maps and carry a power bank.
  • The Ban Gioc – Detian scenic area (on the Chinese side) was, when it opened in 2024, announced as open only to Vietnamese and Chinese visitors.

Where to stay and eat

The rice harvest (September–October), weekends and holidays are busy, so contact your accommodation in advance. Valleys and remote villages have few eateries: ask your host to cook dinner.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cao Bang good for independent travel?

Yes. Roads are mostly good, people are welcoming and the main sights are reachable by motorbike, car or bus. If you’re new to mountain roads, travel with a local driver.

Can I rent a motorbike without a licence?

You shouldn’t. Vietnamese law requires a valid driving licence; riding without one can mean fines, and insurers may refuse to pay. Choose an easy rider or a car with a driver instead.

How many days do I need in Cao Bang?

3–4 days for the Cao Bang Loop via Ban Gioc Waterfall, Phong Nam Valley, Mat Than mountain and Pac Bo; 2 days for Ban Gioc and Phong Nam only.

What papers do foreigners need near the border?

Always carry your passport, follow signs and instructions from officials; your host will register your stay at check-in.

Is English spoken in remote villages?

Basic English is spoken at the main sights; in remote villages use a translation app or travel with a guide.
