    Good to know

    • Many sites are near the border: always carry your passport.
    • Bring cash for markets and remote villages; ATMs are mostly in the provincial centre and larger towns.
    • Respect local customs: ask before photographing people and don’t enter homes uninvited.
    • Leave no trace in caves, lakes and waterfalls: help protect the geopark.

    Visas and documents

    • Most foreign visitors apply for an e-visa on the official portal of Vietnam’s Immigration Department; check the latest eligibility and validity before you travel.
    • Since December 2025 the Tra Linh international border gate in Cao Bang has been one of the gates where foreigners can enter and leave on an e-visa (Resolution 389/NQ-CP).
    • Many sights – Ban Gioc, Pac Bo, Ngoc Con – are right by the border: always carry your passport and follow signs and instructions from the authorities.
    • Hosts must register guests with the local police, so hand over your passport at check-in.
    • According to the 2024 opening announcement, the Ban Gioc – Detian scenic area (crossing to the Chinese side) is only for Vietnamese and Chinese visitors.

    Money, SIM cards and internet

    • Bring enough cash: markets, homestays and rural eateries usually take cash only. ATMs are mainly in the provincial centre and larger towns such as Trung Khanh.
    • Buy a SIM card at the airport or a mobile operator’s shop in Hanoi; bring your passport to register it.
    • Mobile signal is weak in some valleys and high areas: download offline maps before you go.
    • Many homestays have wifi, but speeds vary; bring a power bank.

    Language

    • Vietnamese is the common language. At home and in villages people speak Tay, Nung, Hmong and Dao.
    • Basic English is spoken at the main sights; in remote villages use a translation app or travel with a guide.
