What international travellers say about Cao Bang

What travellers praise

  • Local guides are knowledgeable and patient – they are named in review after review.
  • It feels quiet and authentic, “less touristy than Ha Giang”.
  • Careful drivers, even for first-timers on the back of a motorbike.
  • Local food and nights in village homestays.

Good to know before you go

  • It’s a long way from Hanoi (about 6 hours), and the Ban Gioc day is a long one.
  • Ask about extra charges in advance: VAT, single supplements, border-area permits.
  • The falls carry less water in the dry season; trails are slippery in the rains; January is very cold.
  • Homestay mattresses are often firm and rooms have no air-conditioning: bring insect repellent and warm layers.

Tips

Before you set off

  • Steep passes: check your brakes and travel by day.
  • Phia Oac is much colder than the lowlands: bring warm layers.
  • Khau Coc Cha Pass is on the road from Bao Lac up to Xuan Truong, so you drive up and come back the same way. Early mornings and late afternoons are often foggy.
  • Ask about Bao Lac market days before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Is this itinerary hard?

The passes are full of bends: best for those used to mountain roads, or travelling with a local driver.

Can I continue to Ha Giang?

Yes. A road links Bao Lac with Meo Vac (Ha Giang); see the “Ha Giang + Cao Bang, 7 days” itinerary.

Can I see all 15 tiers of Khau Coc Cha from the road?

No. The cliffs hide most of the bends. For the full view, hike about 30 – 60 minutes up Pac Thoc peak opposite the pass; the path is steep with sharp limestone, so wear grippy shoes and ask locals for the way.
