Plan your trip
Five bases for every kind of trip, from city-centre hotels to stone stilt-house homestays by the falls.

First-timers, easy logistics
Plenty of hotels, restaurants, markets and services, and the starting point for every direction. Ideal for your first or last night.

Sunrise at the falls, village life
Stay near the falls to see Ban Gioc at dawn before the crowds. Khuoi Ky stone village and nearby hamlets have many family homestays.

Slow travel, valley sunrises, harvest season
A handful of family homestays sit in and around the valley, about 26 km from Ban Gioc. Stay overnight to climb Pi Pha viewpoint at sunrise and walk the villages after the day-trippers leave. There are almost no restaurants in the valley: ask your host to cook dinner and bring cash.

Cool air, cloud seas, trekking
Stay in a Dao Tien village and wake above a sea of cloud. Nights are cold, especially in winter, so pack warm clothes.

Riders on the western passes
A riverside town on the Gam River, about 50 minutes’ drive from Khau Coc Cha Pass, and a handy link towards Ha Giang.

Plenty of choice near restaurants, markets and the bus station; good for your first and last nights, or as a base for day trips to Pac Bo and Phia Oac.
Stay with Tay, Nung or Dao families, share home-cooked meals and village stories. Rooms are simple, with firm mattresses, sometimes in one large shared room.
Near Ban Gioc Waterfall and on the Phia Den tea hills; more comfort, good for families with young children.
visitcaobang.org does not rank or promote any individual property. Choose a homestay or hotel that matches what matters to you.
Ask whether beds have firm or soft mattresses, whether bedding is warm enough for cold highland nights, and whether rooms are private or shared.
Close to nature – eco-style stilt houses and stone houses built with local materials – or comfortable, upscale hotels and resorts.
Need rest? Pick somewhere quiet, away from main roads and karaoke bars. Prefer a lively vibe? Ask about bonfires, singing, parties and loud music – and what time they end.
Private bathroom, hot water, wifi and phone signal; can cars and coaches reach the door?
Does the host cook for guests, and can they cater for vegetarian diets or allergies?
Prefer licensed accommodation; read recent reviews and look at guests’ own photos.
