Ban Gioc Waterfall: what to know before you go

Seven things that make a trip to Ban Gioc smoother and more beautiful.

1. Pick the right season

The falls are fullest and whitest from August to October; September – October adds golden rice along the Quay Son River. From November the dry season brings less water but clear skies and jade-green pools.

2. Arrive early

The falls are busiest from mid-morning to early afternoon. Stay in Khuoi Ky stone village or near the falls for a sunrise you will have almost to yourself.

3. Bring your passport

The falls sit right on the border and documents may be checked. Follow signs and instructions from the authorities, and don’t fly drones without permission.

4. The Ban Gioc – Detian scenic area

The cooperative scenic area with China officially opened on 15 October 2024 for organised groups, each staying no more than 6 hours on the other side. As announced at opening, it is only for Vietnamese and Chinese visitors; third-country nationals cannot yet cross.

5. Take a bamboo raft

Bamboo rafts take you right up to the spray, best in the high-water season. Wear the life jacket provided and protect your electronics.

6. Combine nearby sights

  • Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda: a short, steep climb to a panorama of the falls.
  • Nguom Ngao Cave: 3 – 4 km away; the visitor section is about 950 m and takes around an hour.
  • Khuoi Ky stone village: Tay stone stilt houses, with homestays.
  • Phong Nam – Ngoc Con valley: about 26 km away – worth a night.

7. Food and beds

Around the falls you’ll find simple restaurants and stilt-house homestays, plus a resort nearby. Harvest season and weekends are very busy, so book early.
