Choose Cao Bang if

  • You want to see Ban Gioc Waterfall, the Quay Son River and the golden rice of Phong Nam.
  • You like to travel slowly, sleep in valley homestays and avoid big groups.
  • You are travelling with family or are not used to very steep passes.
  • You are into geology: Cao Bang is a UNESCO Global Geopark.

Doing both in one trip

A road links Meo Vac (Ha Giang) with Bao Lac (Cao Bang). In about 7 days you can travel Ha Giang – Quan Ba – Dong Van – Ma Pi Leng – Meo Vac, cross to Bao Lac, ride Khau Coc Cha Pass and continue to the Cao Bang provincial centre, finishing at Ban Gioc and Phong Nam valley.

Tip: In 2026 both Cao Bang and Ha Giang were named among Vietnam’s 10 most welcoming destinations in Booking.com’s Traveller Review Awards.
